As the world rolls out COVID-19 vaccines, we start to envision what our new normal will look like and brighter times ahead. 2020 was undoubtedly the strangest year of our lives, but one when King’s and our alumni came together to make a positive difference. So, as winter turns to spring, we reflect on how far we’ve come, as individuals and as a wider community, making ‘Progress’ the perfect theme for this issue.
In ‘King’s Impact’, we explore the research taking place at the Global Institute for Women’s Leadership (GIWL) and explore when we might close the gender pay gap. We speak to the GIWL Director, Professor Rosie Campbell, and she breaks down the role research plays in helping progress equal gender opportunities.
We also examine what the past year’s experiences have meant for two members of the King’s community in ‘What I’ve Learned: COVID-19 & Me’, reflecting on how, in the darkest of times, progress can still be made. ‘Inside King’s’ explores whether we now have reasons to be hopeful about the climate.
In ‘Service to Society’, we look at the liberation of Bergen-Belsen concentration camp in 1945, and the little-known – yet remarkable – story of the 34 medical students from Guy’s, King’s and St Thomas’ who saved thousands of lives. By reflecting on the challenges of the past, we can truly see just how far we have come.
In ‘InTouch Online Introduces’, we meet Isobel Waller-Bridge (MMus Music, 2012), who is making waves in the music scene. Isobel tells us about her time at King’s and how it helped her career go from strength to strength.
In addition to this, we explore how King’s is supporting children and young people’s mental health, and how you can join us on this journey. And, second, in ‘The Changing Face of King’s’, hear from Professor ʼFunmi Olonisakin, Vice-President & Vice-Principal International and Professor of Security, Leadership and Development, on our internationalisation project and what it means for the King’s community.
