‘It was a real honour to be elected town mayor’
Jonathan Woodhead (MA War Studies, 2003)
Jonathan Woodhead (MA War Studies, 2003) is an expert in public affairs and government relations. He was also elected Mayor of Biggleswade in Bedfordshire earlier this year.
‘My favourite memories of my time at King’s are twofold,’ says Jonathan. ‘The lectures and classes at the Norfolk Building certainly had their charms. But the location just off the Strand was hard to beat!
‘I also enjoyed visits to Cumberland Lodge in Windsor Great Park at the start of the course. We had some amazing guest lecturers, including Major General Julian Thompson, the military historian and former Royal Marine in charge of Three Commando Brigade during the Falklands War.’
Local action
Following his degree, Jonathan worked in public affairs and government relations, and most recently in higher education. His involvement in local politics began six years ago.
He explains: ‘I was approached about standing for the Town Council in 2019 and it’s gone from there! I chaired our Town Centre Committee for two years, helping to energise local events and our town centre. I believe we’ve benefitted from having a range of ages and perspectives on the Town Council.’
In May 2025, Jonathan was elected as Mayor of Biggleswade.
‘It was a real honour to be elected town mayor,’ adds Jonathan. ‘The market town of Biggleswade is a wonderful community and I’m proud to be part of it on so many levels. As part of the mayoral year, I’m keen to highlight many of the charities, organisations and companies in our town that don’t often get the spotlight. These include Magpas Air Ambulance and the voluntary organisation, Biggleswade Good Neighbours.’
The power of networking
Jonathan, who is also a parent, offers some learnings from his life in local politics to new graduates wanting to make their own impact on the world.
‘Network, network, network,’ he reveals. ‘Studying and academic qualifications are part of it. But whatever path you choose – the sciences, academia, politics – it’s helpful to know others in your situation you can seek advice from.’
