Theology class of 2009 reunion

Amy King (Theology, 2009)

In the pursuit of a Theology degree, unexpected friendships blossomed. Now, 17 years later, these bonds remain close. Amy King recounts the tales of treasured friendships formed during her time at King's.

'Our Theology cohort was small compared to other courses and we quickly formed a close friendship group, including two of my best friends, Amy Marks and Lucy Harlin-Bethell (now Morrell). I've continued to share many happy memories with them, including Amy being a bridesmaid at both of our weddings in 2009 and 2016!'

Charismatic and kind

'However, during our Theology degree, there was one remarkable person with whom we all formed an unexpected friendship. This person has been fundamental in bringing us back to meet up together over the past 17 years.

'Some 50 years our senior, William Norris, having recently retired from law, decided to embark on a new adventure, enrolling on the King's Theology BA course. With the majority of the group being school leavers, he certainly stood out.

'From the start, he won us over with his charismatic personality, sense of humour, eagerness to engage and, most notably, his kindness and hospitality. Along with his wife, Catherine, he took us under his wing, even inviting us for socials at his home, and joining us on the occasional student night out!'

Celebrating 17 years together

'We've continued to meet up over the years. On 4 November 2023, for the first time since the pandemic, 10 of our original Theology cohort (and one lecturer) met up in the Salonik Room in London's Ognisko Restaurant, to share a meal, and have a well-overdue catch up.

'Since graduating in 2009, William has gone on to complete a master's degree and PhD at King's. So, at the reunion, we were also joined by some of his other course mates, and family members.

'On the day, it was such a pleasure to meet even more King's alumni and others connected to our friendship group. It's special that we've stayed in touch for 17 years (and counting), especially as William is now 86 years old.

'I look forward to many more years of happy memories to come.'
