King's as a University has become synonymous with London. Any alum will associate their time here with the bustle of the Strand, views across the river and the unique London culture.

However, with our ethos of making the world a better place, King's does not exist within a London bubble. Through our research, partnerships and alumni, we are making a difference all over the world.

We are proud to boast alumni in almost every country in the world. While some of you may feel like King's memories are distant, there could be tendrils of King's work happening closer to you than you might think.

Ready to explore? Take a trip around the world using the interactive map below and discover more about our global work.

Alumni unite: tackling children's clothing insecurity together

Like many of our thriving international alumni groups, King's alumni in Boston came together to mark Global Day of Service in March. Our alumni gave their time to charity, Cradles to Crayons, where they brought donations and helped by sorting and quality-checking clothing for distribution to children and their families.

King's professor gives guidance to the EU

Professor Pacheco Pardo, Head of the Department of European and International Studies at King's, was invited to compile and present an analysis on the EU's relationship with Japan for its Committee on Foreign Affairs. His report examined the progress made in recent years and highlighted areas of vast potential where further work can be carried out.

The report advised on the importance of Japan, South Korea and other countries in the region, to European security in the context of China's rise, growing Sino-American competition and Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

King's students' research helps change restrictive abortion laws

Postgraduate students at The Dickson Poon School of Law's Transnational Legal Institute played a significant role in the conclusion of a two-year legal proceeding, which sought to decriminalise abortion on the basis that the current law violates fundamental rights and freedoms.

Under the leadership of Professor Octávio Ferraz, the team researched comparative national law and relevant international law. They compiled their findings into a 13,000 word document that contributed towards the court's decision to rule that abortion is legal up to 24 weeks.

Fiji

Working with those on the frontline of climate change

Many Pacific Islands and their citizens are on the frontlines of climate change. King's research has been helping local communities use nature-based solutions to protect their homes and livelihoods from its effects. For example, planting mangrove forests to stabilise eroding shorelines.

Through her long-time work with the University of the South Pacific and as a member of the Lomani Gau Project, Geography's Dr Rowan Gard has been able to work with Fiji Red Cross. Together, they have identified ways to streamline assessment and supply deployment in natural disaster response when some of the worst impacts of climate change are felt.

India

King's legal students collaborate for climate justice

In 2021, King's Legal Clinic launched the Climate Justice Project. The project aims to look at the impact of climate change on traditional communities on the border of India and Bangladesh. They aim to learn whether large international investors are doing enough to assess the impact on human rights and provide remedies.

The project, which runs in partnership with Jadavpur University and West Bengal National University of Juridical Sciences, has brought together students in the UK and India for an MA Law (LLM) module Transnational Remedies to Environmental Harms with Clinical Legal Education. In this module, students are taught to identify transnational legal remedies for rising sea-levels and extreme weather events such as cyclones.

Japan

Alumni come together to improve the local environment

Alumni in Tokyo have built a community around their passion for volunteering and environmentalism. Every year, alumni embody the King's ethos of service to society by coming together to take part in a beach clean up. Last year, the event took place at Imade Beach, which is on the opposite side of Shioya Beach's famous sea turtle spawning ground. This year, the beach clean up will take place at Yuigahama Beach.

African Leadership Centre

Founded in 2005, King's African Leadership Centre (ALC) envisions a future generation of Africans that will shape thinking and policy decision-making. It is a community of leaders who are driving peace, security and development on the African continent through research and policy.

In 2020, the ALC's sister centre opened in Nairobi. Together, they have trained over 100 African scholars from 22 African countries and attracted some of the most influential African and global thought leaders to lecture and interact with students.

Understanding the movements of endangered humpbacks

Since the early 1990s, small numbers of humpback whales have been observed visiting the Pitcairn Islands. The exact connection between the Pitcairn population and other groups in the Southern Ocean is unknown. King's academics have launched a project to gather photographs, whale song recordings and genetic data from this pod to assess its connectivity to other sites in the Oceania region. This will improve our understanding of the population's status and enhance regional conservation efforts.

Singapore

Exporting King's Nursing to South East Asia

After five successful years, King's has renewed its partnership with Ngee Ann Academy in Singapore. The agreement gives qualified nurses in Singpare the opportunity to gain a highly regarded degree in Nursing whilst continuing to work in the country's healthcare sector.

To date, over 600 nurses have enrolled on the programme and, in November last year, the first cohort of 149 students celebrated their graduation. 72% of graduating students achieved a first class or an upper-second class degree.

Zambia

Innovations in improving cancer control

There is evidence that the disease burden in Zambia is changing. Cases of breast cancer, which are already the leading cause of cancer-related deaths in the country, are on the rise. In addition, Zambian women are facing one of the highest incidences of cervical cancer in the world.

However, non-communicable diseases like cancer are still not part of the mainstream international development narrative, meaning that funding for these diseases is limited.

King's Global Health Partnerships and the King's Institute of Cancer Policy are working with Zambian colleagues to share their expertise and undertake an assessment of cancer services in the country. This work will support the implementation of a National Cancer Control Plan. So far, the partnership has seen cervical cancer screening rolled out to all districts and 278 cervical cancer screening clinics develop the capacity for immediate treatment of pre-malignant lesions.
