We are deeply saddened to share news of the passing of Llewellyn Alan Stephens, who died in December 2022. He will be remembered for his willingness to help others.

A fulfilled dream

Llewellyn Alan Stephens, affectionately known as Willy, arrived in London from Brisbane, Australia in 1979 to fulfil his dream of completing an MA Law (LLM) in England. He spent a year studying at King's, which was everything he hoped it would be, both academically and socially. He was the stroke of King's College Eight rowing team, coached by the late, much-loved, Colin Slee, who was the Chaplain of King's at that time. He even enjoyed the privilege of rowing at the Henley Royal Regatta. He made many friends and met his future wife, Susan (Music, 1980), who was also studying at King's.

After graduating in 1980, Willy found employment in London for three years, first for a chartered accountants, then at a merchant bank. He returned to Brisbane in 1983 to work as a barrister at the Queensland Bar. He continued working as a barrister until his retirement due to ill-health in mid 2022.

A selfless helper

A hallmark of his career was that he never hesitated to assist colleagues. He saw it as his duty to mentor upcoming members of the Bar and tutored many work experience students. Although his expertise was in commercial law, he had a broad and varied practice and, later in his career, was proud to do pro bono work for local native Aboriginal people.

He married Susan in Brisbane in 1987. They were blessed with two sons and two daughters, and remained a devoted couple until Willy's death in December 2022. Our thoughts are with his family and friends.

Details from this obituary have been provided by Willy's wife Susan.
